The office of green design firm LPA Inc. features a living wall and a collaboration-friendly environment.

My long-time friend Dan Heinfeld, president of the Irvine-headquartered architectural and engineering firm LPA, Inc., smiles when I say that he was “doing green” before most people could spell the word. LPA has long been known as a pioneer in sustainable design and is responsible for many institutional, educational and corporate projects throughout Orange County.

Now LPA has taken the second floor of its leased building in University Research Park adjacent to UCI and in that 15,000 square feet has created what the firm calls a working “sustainable design lab.”

Combining its architectural skills with engineering services, which the firm brought in-house five years ago, the multi-disciplined lab includes six Solatube skylights, operable windows synchronized with ceiling fans, window shades controlled by daylight, automatically controlled LED lighting, demountable glass partitions, and collaborative workstations manufactured with 70% recyclable content.

Heinfeld calls the new space "the office of the future” and intends to incorporate the concepts in future commercial, educational and institutional projects designed by the firm. Of interest, LPA’s 200- person, now two-story Irvine office has no private offices – including no private office for the president.
