Desert Hot Springs High School Expansion
Desert Hot Springs, California
This project called for the expansion of an existing high school for 850 students to accommodate its anticipated growth to a 2,100 master plan enrollment. LPA along with the Site Design Committee began with a program reconfiguration examination of the existing buildings in order to implement the District’s current instructional philosophy goals. In addition, the team analyzed the environmental context to develop a solution that was combatable with the extreme desert climate. The resulting conclusions to these issues included the reprogramming of the four campus wings to focus around distinct academic discipline groupings and the new construction of classroom and shaded courtyard spaces to support the need for additional teaching stations for humanities, math/science, performing arts, and physical education programs.
